A Helen Keller Biography

HK

HKpicHelen Keller came from USA Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was born June 27, 1880 and died June 1, 1986. When she was 9 months old she got a high fever and became ill that left her to be blind and deaf.

One day her mother came into Helen’s room and saw her lying in her bed. She was only 19 months old. Helen was staring and she didn’t blink. Her mother got a bright light and pointed it to Helens eyes. Helen kept her eyes wide open. Helen’s mother screamed. When it was time to eat her mother used to ring a little bell so Helen knew it was time to eat. This time Helens mother was shaking the bell and Helen didn’t move, then her mother knew she was both blind and deaf.

Years past and Helen got whatever she wanted. For example if she wanted someone else’s food she would just take it from their plate. Her mother had seen that another child were deaf and blind so she got a special teacher from a deaf school called Annie Sullivan. Annie gave Helen a doll from the deaf girls at the school. Then Annie asked for it back but Helen wanted it and would not return it. Helen got angry. She kicked and screamed. Helens father just said that she could have it so Annie let go. Helen threw it and the doll broke.

Years went and Helen learned more and more. When she turned 10 years old she was able to write, speak (but still struggling), and read in braille. When Helen grew up she could read French, Greek in braille and more. Helen Keller was the best-educated deaf blind person in the world. She was even on the Alabama state quarter.

Rosa Parks

Rosa-Parks-9433715-1-402

Rosa Parks is an African American hero. She was born on Feb 4th, 1913. Her story is unusual. For a small reason she was sent to jail.

One day, Dec 1st, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa sat in a bus in the section where both white people and black people could sit. After a while, a white man wanted to sit in her seat, but she refused! Even the bus driver came to ask her to move, but she still refused! “Get up, lady or else you’ll get arrested!” the bus driver screamed. But Rosa still refused. She thought that black people should be treated the same way white people were treated.

Soon she got arrested. Then Martin Luther King Jr. got Rosa freed. He then organized the bus boycott. This meant all black people would walk instead of using buses. So all black people walked for a year to change the laws that said black people had to sit at the back of the bus.  And after one whole year of walking the law was changed.

Rosa Parks fought for what she thought was right. She died on Oct 24th, 2005. She was a true civil rights hero.
